How to use the metronome

The click is scheduled with the Web Audio clock, so it stays steady even if your browser is busy.

Common tempos

Jump straight to a tempo. Each page starts the metronome at that BPM.

How to practise with a metronome

  1. Pick a tempo where you can play the passage perfectly, even if it feels slow.
  2. Play it cleanly three times in a row.
  3. Raise the tempo by 4 to 5 BPM and repeat.
  4. When you start making mistakes, drop back 10 BPM and build up again.

Try setting the clicks on beats 2 and 4 only (choose 2 beats per bar and play the click as the backbeat). It trains a strong internal pulse, which is how jazz and pop players practise groove.

Tempo markings

The metronome shows the Italian tempo marking for the current BPM, such as Andante or Allegro. Markings describe character as much as speed, so the ranges are a guide. See the full tempo markings chart.

Frequently asked questions

What is BPM?

Beats per minute. 60 BPM is one beat per second; 120 BPM is two beats per second.

What tempo should I practise at?

The fastest tempo at which you can play the passage with no mistakes. Then raise it gradually, 4 to 5 BPM at a time.

Can I use the keyboard?

Yes. Space starts and stops, the arrow keys change the tempo by 1 BPM, and T taps the tempo.

Does the metronome work on a phone?

Yes. It runs in any modern mobile browser. If you hear nothing, check that your phone is not on silent mode, which mutes web audio on iPhone.

Is it free?

Yes. Free, with no sign-up and no app to install.
